Community Solar

Solar savings without a panel on your roof.

Eligible customers in select utility territories can subscribe to a local solar farm without installing anything at their own property. You claim a share of a project’s output, the utility credits your bill each month for your share, and you pay the subscription provider for those credits at a guaranteed discount. Discounts typically run between 5% and 20%, depending on the provider and the location.

For a commercial account, the subscription is custom-sized against your facility’s annual electric costs. Getting that sizing right is most of the value in the transaction — an oversized subscription generates credits you cannot absorb, and an undersized one leaves savings on the table. That is the part we do.

No equipment to buy. No panels to install. No upfront investment.

How It Works

You never owe the provider more than the credits are worth, and the discount is locked for the full term. Output is higher in summer than in winter, so the value of the credits moves seasonally, the discount does not.

1.
You Join a Local Solar Project

A local solar project is divided into hundreds of subscriptions. You take a share of its output.

2.
Your Provider Notifies Your Utility

The provider notifies your utility that you are participating.

3.
We Handle the Claims

Each month, credits for your share of the project’s generation appear on your utility bill.

4.
You Pay Less and Keep the Savings

You pay the provider for those credits, less your guaranteed discount. For example, if you receive $100 in credits at a 10% discount, you owe $90, and the difference of $10 is your savings.

What It Does to Your Supply Contract

Nothing. States deliberately separated community solar from retail supply so that the two do not overlap. If you have a retail supply agreement, you can subscribe to a community solar project and still receive the same bill credits each month.

One thing worth arranging: ask your retail supplier to put you on utility consolidated billing. The larger your utility bill, the larger a subscription you can support, and the more you save. If your supplier bills you directly instead, the solar credits can generally only offset delivery and taxes, not supply.

Where It Is Available

Eligibility and savings vary by location, utility territory and program. In participating markets, customers receive savings as a discount on the solar credits applied to their utility bill.

Community Solar: Frequently Asked Questions

A structure that lets customers take the output of a local solar project without installing anything. Each project is divided into hundreds of subscriptions, so by signing up you claim a percentage of its output. The provider assigns you to a project, notifies your utility, and each month you receive credits on your bill for your share.

By your share of what the project generated. If your subscription is 1% of a project that produced 100,000 kWh in a month, you receive a credit for 1,000 kWh at a rate set by the utility. Output is higher in summer, so the credit value fluctuates seasonally.
