United Salt Hockley LLC, part of US salt producer United Salt Corporation, will use 100% renewable power for its operations under a deal with retail electricity provider TXU Energy.
The contract was announced on Tuesday by independent energy services Priority Power Management LLC, which acted as United Salt Hockley’s advisor.
The deal calls for United Salt Hockley to purchase about 25 million kWh of certified renewable power produced by wind and solar parks in Texas. The electricity will help the salt company supply its salt mine in Hockley and corporate headquarters in Houston with 100% green power, in line with its commitment to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
The contracted power output is equal to the annual power demand of 1,900 homes and will mitigate about 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
“When companies the size of United Salt transition to clean energy, it has a huge impact on not just the environment but the confidence the public has in the entire industry,” said John Bick, chief commercial officer of Priority Power.
